By now some of you may have come across the fact that between Configuration Manager 2007 and Configuration Manager 2012, the behaviour of Group Policy processing during an Operating System Deployment task sequence has changed (Setup Windows and ConfigMgr Task Sequence Step). In Configuration Manager 2012, Group Policy for Windows Vista or above does not apply until after the task sequence has finished (ie. Clicking on Deployment Complete). This can result in group policy not being applied when a user first logs on to the PC.

Ideally, we want to click on “finish” and and then log on ready to go with everything we need.

A colleague of mine found a solution (which involves a bit of “hacking” and is likely completely unsupported by Microsoft), see here for more information: Apply Group Policy in a ConfigMgr 2012 Task Sequence. I hope it goes without saying, but make sure you test this thoroughly before using it on a production deployment.
